Your Antivirus says..

Your antivirus software might report xpy as Spyware or a Trojan. xpy is written and compiled using NSIS, false positives are unfortunately quite common among NSIS compiled programs. The NSIS development team is aware of this situation and constantly works with software companies to solve such issues.

For more details on this issue, please refer to the NSIS forums.

If you have stumbled across this problem, please update your virus signatures first. If the problem persists, you can help by reporting a false positive to the manufacturer of your antivirus software.

xpy 1.0.0 Beta 3.1

Interesting this stupid startup bug had to happen just when I upgraded to Windows 7, because it wouldn’t get triggered on Windows Vista or 7. I keep on telling everybody to use xpy for Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 Server, so it’s a bit unforgiving I didn’t test Beta 3 on any of these.

I’m deeply sorry I wasn’t able to test Beta 3 properly, but the damage is done and I have learned my lesson. However, I find it interesting that none of the websites that featured xpy Beta 3 seemed to have tested it before writing about it. I’m not making them responsible for my mistake, but what about quality control in journalism? Is it all about being the first?

You can now download the all fixed Beta 3.1, of course it also works on Windows Vista (and maybe Windows 7) – but I recommend using Vispa if you for these.

xpy 1.0.0 Beta 2 & Vispa 0.5.1

The all new versions remove some legacy-code and fixes minor bugs. If you haven’t used xpy since version 0.8.x (anno 2005), you might not be able to restore your settings properly. There’s also one new feature, that allows the user to ignore all existing settings and lets you change whatever you think is good. Most people will not want to try this, but it’s there for very unlikely cases.

Vispa 0.5

Based on a newer sourcecode than last week’s xpy beta, Vispa 0.5 brings the same functionality and even adds some new features. If you are a user of Vista, Windows Server 2008 or Windows 7, Vispa has been made just for you!

xpy goes beta!

To the day five years after the initial release, xpy is now available in a first beta. The all new version adds a graphical user interface for some of its more hidden features, like the creation of profiles. These allow you to save your preferred settings in a file, so you can easily apply these on multiple computer or every time you reinstall your computer. The command-line parameters have been overworked as well, which means that some of the old commands have been changed. Generally speaking, the parameters have been unified and offer some more options.

I am now looking for people to help me localizing xpy, the official call for help has been posted on SourceForge. Further details on the translation process can be found here, be sure to read both posts carefully before starting. Many languages are still available from earlier versions, so the translations just have to be updated.

xpy 0.10.9 and Vispa 0.2.9

The works on the next major release stalled, but I had no intention of updating the old versions. I was notified of some bugs, and as they were easy to fix – here are the new versions. Thanks Mike!

Browser Statistics Sep/Oct 2008

The browser statistics from the last 4 weeks show a growing use of Firefox, the majority of visitors on this website are using the alternative to 2nd place Internet Explorer. However, 76% of all Internet Explorer users have upgraded to IE7 or IE8. Firefox users are equally up-to-date with 86% running any 3.x version.

Altogether, more than 2/3 are using an alternative browser. It’s likely though, that vistors interested in software security (like my software) are more sensitive towards the issue and are especially fond of Firefox.

New ClickFont beta

ClickFont allows easy font installation from anywhere in the system. The all new beta version supports TrueType, OpenType and PostScript fonts. You can download it from the tools page.

xpy 0.10.7 and Vispa 0.2.7

Lots of new features to restore deleted items and some minor bugfixes coming to the all new version. The Czech translation had to be removed temporarily, but should be back in 0.10.8/0.2.8 – most likely the last in this branch.

xpy 0.10.5 and Vispa 0.2.5

Many new features and many bugfixes are coming with the all new version. A bug causing language problems should’ve been fixed, making English the default language (again) on unsupported language environments. Also some bugs with batch-files has been fixed, they now create restore points properly and read the search engine given in the file. The next release will see some more features and fix another minor bug.. and everything else i don’t know about yet!

What Language Files?!

Unfortunately, some online publications point explicitly to the download of language files. Please note, that these are not required if you want to use xpy to tweak your system. These files exist, but are targeted only at our translators. Currently, only three translations are available (English, German and Czech) – all included in the standard builtdof xpy. Additional monolingual builds of xpy can be found on the SourceForge pages.

Please help stopping the rumour, that home users are in need of extra language files!
